Ukraine plans to add another 160,000 troops to its military as Russia gains territory in the east.
Russia has been making progress in the eastern Donetsk Region and announced on Tuesday that it had captured the mining city of Selydove.
This comes amid reports of a number North Korean troops being deployed to Russia.
Ukraine’s military has recently been under intense pressure, partly due to Russia’s superior manpower and resources.
Oleksandr Litvynenko told the Ukrainian Parliament on Tuesday that there were plans to call more than 160,000 people.
The AFP news agency reported that the recruitment process will last three months.
The announcement comes at a time when Ukraine continues to commit personnel to its incursion into the Kursk region of Russia that began in August.
Pentagon estimates that around 10,000 North Korean troops are being trained in eastern Russia.
The US announced on Tuesday that a “small group” of North Korean soldiers had been sent to Kursk. It said that a couple of thousand more were heading there.
South Korea claims that troops are being trained at various locations and many of them are wearing Russian uniforms to disguise themselves.
A high-ranking government official stated that they believed that up to 11,000 troops had already been sent into Russia, with at the very least 3,000 soldiers in the west.
Last week, President Vladimir Putin refused deny that North Korean soldiers had arrived in Russia. This was after reports that Pyongyang would be sending thousands of troops to help its ally.
The latest mobilization comes after Ukraine passed legislation in April that helped mobilise troops to combat invading Russian Forces.
The law requires that every man between the ages of 25 and 60 enter his details into an electronic database to be able to be called up. Conscription officers are hunting for men who avoid the register and pushing them into hiding.
The measure aims to boost the military’s numbers, which are under pressure as Russia continues its gains in the East.
Moscow has announced it now controls the entire Selydove region in Donetsk, including the surrounding villages. It is focusing on the city of Pokrovsk.
Just 18km away, this is a strategic transport hub.
