Russia’s Plane Industry in Trouble
Russia‘s main plane manufacturer, United Aircraft Corporation, has not been able to build many planes. Instead of producing 108 passenger planes, they only made seven since 2022.
The reason for this is that Western countries imposed sanctions on Russia after it invaded Ukraine. This meant that Russian companies couldn’t get the parts and supplies they needed to make planes.
Russia wanted to start making more planes using materials from within their own country. They planned to build a lot of planes, including 69 this year. But that didn’t happen. The United Aircraft Corporation used up old stock to make just seven SuperJet 100 planes.
Some people think that the plan to make more planes was not taken seriously and was only made to calm down government officials. This crisis is not just affecting plane manufacturers but also airline companies.
About 30 Russian airlines might go bankrupt in 2025, which would affect a quarter of the country’s passenger traffic. Only big airlines were able to buy back some of their leased planes with help from the government.
