**Israel’s “Humanitarian Zone” in Gaza Hit by Almost 100 Attacks**
The area of Gaza where Israel told people to go for their safety has been hit by almost 100 attacks since May, according to BBC Verify analysis. This comes as negotiations for a truce between Israel and Hamas seem to be approaching a breakthrough.
**”Humanitarian Zones” Created in October 2023**
Israel’s military created “humanitarian zones” in Gaza in October 2023 to protect residents and keep them away from harm. The area was later expanded significantly in May 2024 to include the cities of Khan Younis and Deir al-Balah.
**Attacks on Humanitarian Zone Increased Since May**
BBC Verify analysis shows that attacks on the “humanitarian zone” have increased since May. At least 22 strikes were recorded this month, with 28 Israeli attacks documented since June 1st.
**Resident Lives in Constant Uncertainty**
A resident who lives in the zone, Khaled Abdul Rahman, told BBC that residents are subjected to daily bombardments, often resulting in injuries and deaths. “We are denied a true sense of safety, and fear is consuming our lives,” he said.
**IDF Claims Targets Hamas Militants**
The Israeli military claims it was targeting Hamas militants operating in the area, accusing the group of violating international laws while exploiting civilians as human shields and launching rockets out of the zone.
**UN and International Organizations Disagree**
However, the UN and international humanitarian organizations operating in Gaza disagree with Israel’s claims. They say that there is no such thing as a “safe zone” that can be unilaterally enforced, and that Gaza has no safe place.
