**Ukraine Interrogates Two Chinese Nationals Captured Fighting for Russia**
The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has conducted the first interrogation of two Chinese nationals who were fighting on behalf of Russia in Ukraine. The captives, identified as Wang Guangjun and Zhang Renbo, were captured while serving in different Russian military units near Tarasivka and Bilohorivka, respectively.
According to an intelligence document seen by the Kyiv Independent, at least 163 Chinese nationals are currently serving in Russia’s Armed Forces. This revelation has raised concerns about China‘s involvement in the conflict and its role as a supplier of dual-use goods essential for weapons manufacturing to Russia.
**The Interrogations**
In a video released by President Volodymyr Zelensky, Wang Guangjun, 34, from Zhengzhou, Henan Province, claims to have surrendered along with two other Chinese fighters and a Russian soldier. However, after they had given up, Russian forces allegedly dropped an explosive device on the group, nearly killing him before a Ukrainian soldier saved his life.
The second captive, Zhang Renbo, 24, from Jiangxi Province, claims to have never taken part in combat operations before being deployed by Russia. He says he was recruited through an online ad that promised a payment of 2 million rubles ($23,300) after signing up for a military contract.
**Reactions and Commentary**
China has responded to the allegations by saying it is “verifying” the claims, reiterating that Chinese citizens are prohibited from participating in foreign armed conflicts. However, experts point out that this statement contradicts China’s increasing involvement in global hotspots through its Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).
“The fact that these Chinese nationals were captured on Ukrainian territory marks a potential escalation of foreign involvement,” says Dr. Oleksandra Guryanova, an expert on international relations at the Kyiv International Institute.
“China’s portrayal as a neutral party in this conflict is also coming under scrutiny,” she adds. “The country has been supplying Russia with dual-use goods essential for weapons manufacturing, which raises questions about its true intentions.”
**Ukraine Demands Explanation**
In response to the capture of the two Chinese fighters, Ukraine summoned China’s chargé d’affaires to demand an official explanation and express condemnation. President Zelensky has called on international partners to take action against Russia’s continued involvement in the conflict.
“We all need to deprive Russia of its ability to continue this war,” he said on X. “They don’t care who dies as long as the war continues.”
As tensions rise, it remains to be seen how China will respond to these allegations and whether they will take steps to distance themselves from Russia’s military actions in Ukraine.
