Israel carried out at least 12 air strikes in Beirut on Saturday, the heaviest attack on the Lebanese Capital in more than a fortnight. Huge plumes of smoke rose over the city’s south suburbs, which is where Hezbollah has its main base. In some cases, the Israeli military warned residents to leave, but only gave them a short time to do so – sometimes just a few moments. At least one multi-storey structure was completely destroyed. Damage and casualties are still being assessed. The Israeli military claimed it had targeted Hezbollah’s weapons storage facilities and intelligence headquarters command center in Dahieh. Israeli medics confirmed that shrapnel killed one man. After three days of relative quiet in Beirut, Saturday saw the southern suburbs rumble with the sound from Israeli air strikes. Smoke billowing from several neighbourhoods was black at first and then grey. It darkened the sky. The Israeli forces continue to target areas outside Beirut. A couple was filmed north of the city trying to escape from a suspected Israeli drone. According to the Lebanese National News Agency (NNA), the couple stopped their car and ran into undergrowth to escape a reported missile attack. However, they were killed. A drone also struck Benjamin Netanyahu‘s residence in Caesarea, a northern coastal city, on Saturday morning. The US President Joe Biden said that there is a possibility of “working toward a ceasefire” where Israel is fighting Hezbollah in Lebanon but it will be harder in Gaza.
