**UK to Supply 5,000 Air Defence Missiles to Ukraine**
The UK government has announced a major deal with the Thales missile factory in Belfast. The company will supply up to 5,000 air defence missiles to Ukraine.
This is worth up to £1.6 billion and will create new jobs in Northern Ireland. Thales will recruit an extra 200 staff to meet the demand.
The missiles are already being used by Ukrainian forces. This deal shows the UK’s commitment to helping Ukraine defend itself against Russia.
**A Significant Order**
East Belfast MP Gavin Robinson said this is a “hugely significant” order, given the current state of international relations. He praised the skill and ingenuity of the Thales team.
This is not the first time the UK has supplied missiles to Ukraine. Last year, a £162 million contract was announced for 650 lightweight multirole missiles (LMMs). The new order is much bigger.
**A Partnership with Ukraine**
The new deal includes a partnership with a Ukrainian industry partner. This company will manufacture launchers and command and control vehicles for the missiles in Ukraine.
This shows the UK’s willingness to work with other countries to help them defend themselves. Defence Secretary John Healey said this deal would “help protect Ukraine against drone and missile attacks”.
**Supporting the Industry**
The UK government is also supporting the local industry. This contract is worth billions of pounds and will create new jobs.
