**Belgian Film Festival Cancels Screening of Controversial Russian Documentary**
The Docville Film Festival in Leuven, Belgium has canceled the screening of a documentary called “Russians at War”. The decision was made after an intervention by the Ukrainian Embassy.
The film’s director, Anastasia Trofimova, is Canadian-Russian. Many people have criticized her documentary for trying to make Russian soldiers involved in the war against Ukraine look good. They say it ignores the crimes these soldiers committed and questions the truthfulness of Ukrainian testimonies.
The Ukrainian Embassy appealed to several organizations to cancel the screening. These included the Belgian federal government, the Flemish government, local authorities in Leuven, and the Catholic University of Leuven. The festival’s management also agreed to cancel the film.
The documentary has been criticized for portraying Russian soldiers as ordinary people who never committed any crimes. It doesn’t show or mention their war crimes. This is similar to how propaganda works, making it look like everything is fine when it’s not.
Trofimova used to work for Russia Today, a propaganda outlet backed by the Kremlin. The film has sparked protests in several countries, including Canada, Australia, and the Netherlands.
