The Brussels Times reported that security measures were increased in a few army barracks on Friday, 11 October, due to concrete threats of spying and sabotage. The Belgian Ministry of Defense has confirmed the news.
The security level in several military quarters was raised to level Bravo (the second of four levels) due to the threat.
Specific measures must be taken for each stage. Details of the additional security measures that are triggered by the elevation of the threat levels cannot be revealed for safety reasons. The measures were implemented on Friday and will remain in place for the moment.
Russian sabotage, espionage and threats across Europe
The Belgian Defense Department is yet to provide any further details on the specific threats. The decision could be related to the recent attacks by pro Russian hacker groups on Belgian sites, but this is not confirmed.
