**EU Expects Serbia to Speed Up Reforms**
The European Union is expecting the Serbian government to pick up its pace on reform efforts. This comes as the Serbian leadership aims to complete preparations for joining the EU by the end of 2026.
According to Guillaume Mercier, a spokesman for the European Commission, Serbia has made some progress in its EU path. However, more work needs to be done, especially in areas such as rule of law and freedom of assembly.
“We expect this work to accelerate,” Mercier said. “We are discussing with Serbia all the open issues on its EU path. We encourage stakeholders supportive of EU integration to contribute through dialogue and compromise.”
The EU is concerned about incidents against demonstrators in Serbia. Mercier expressed concern over these events, saying that a speedy investigation is expected.
“Freedom of assembly is a fundamental EU right,” he said. “It needs to be protected and exercised peacefully, with full respect for the rule of law and public order.”
