**Russia’s Hidden Trade: Stolen Ukrainian Grain in Yemen**
A shocking investigation has revealed that Russia is likely supplying stolen Ukrainian grain to the Houthis in Yemen. This scheme not only hurts Ukraine‘s economy but also uses food aid to strengthen diplomatic ties with groups controlling territory where millions of people face severe hunger.
**The Trail of Grain**
Research by Bellingcat and Lloyd’s List investigators followed the cargo ship Zafar, which made trips from Crimea to Yemen at least twice in recent months. In October, grain was loaded onto the ship in the occupied port of Sevastopol, a city under US and UK sanctions. Despite this, the ship was able to pass inspection by the UN Verification and Inspection Mechanism (UNVIM) when it stopped at Djibouti.
**A Ship with Secrets**
The Zafar had previously made a similar voyage from Sevastopol, avoiding detection by turning off its Automated Identification System (AIS). This allowed the ship to conceal its presence. The terminal where the ship was docked is also under EU sanctions, but there are no UN sanctions against the port of Sevastopol or Russia.
**Stolen Grain and Broken Trust**
There is no information on the exact origin of the grain transported by Zafar. However, Ukrainian farmers in occupied territories have accused Russian forces of stealing their products for further export. The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry has called this situation “outrageous.” This hidden trade not only damages Ukraine’s economy but also undermines trust in international food aid efforts.
