US Troops in Europe: A Deterrent to Russian Aggression
President Biden has informed Congress that 80,000 US troops are stationed across NATO countries in Europe. This number includes military personnel deployed to reassure allies and deter further aggression from Russia.
The deployment is part of broader global security efforts by the US. After Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, security concerns in Europe escalated significantly. The President’s letter states that Washington continues to work with partners worldwide on counterterrorism efforts.
US military presence in Europe has changed since early 2022. Additional force deployments were approved for Eastern Europe in response to Russian threats. In November 2022, the US increased its military contingent in Bavaria, Germany. By January 2023, the number of US troops in Europe had been expanded by another 20,000.
In July 2024, some US military bases in European countries were put on heightened alert due to terrorism concerns. The deployment of 80,000 US troops is a clear sign of the country’s commitment to maintaining security and stability in the region.
