In an interview with Sky News, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken stated that President Joe Biden may allow Ukraine to launch strikes deep into Russian territory. This comes after Iran supplied Moscow with short-range missiles, which are expected to be deployed in Ukraine within weeks.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has urged the U.S. and other Western allies to permit the use of long-range missiles to target Russian locations, in hopes of putting pressure on Moscow to end the ongoing war. When asked if President Biden would consider such actions, Blinken responded that the U.S. has been providing Ukraine with necessary resources to defend against Russian aggression since the start of the war in February 2022.
However, Blinken also mentioned that the U.S. must consider other factors, such as whether Ukraine’s forces are capable of operating and maintaining the sophisticated weapons provided by Western allies. He stated, “We never rule out, but when we rule in, we want to make sure it’s done in a way that can advance what the Ukrainians are trying to achieve.” When asked if the U.S. would lift restrictions on Ukraine’s use of long-range weapons, Blinken replied that the administration is currently working on it.
In summary, while the U.S. is not ruling out the possibility of allowing Ukraine to use long-range missiles, they are carefully considering the potential impact and ensuring that it aligns with Ukraine’s goals.
