The White House announced that President Joe Biden met with the wife of late Russian opposition leader Alexey Nailny and his daughter on Thursday, as he prepares to impose additional sanctions against Russia.
Biden announced that sanctions would be imposed on Putin after the meeting.
“I had the privilege of meeting his wife and her daughter and, let’s be clear, he was an incredible man of courage,” Biden said to reporters about Navalny. “We’re going to announce sanctions against Putin tomorrow, who is responsible, for his death.”

Biden said that it was clear after the meeting that Navalny’s wife would “continue to fight.”
“We are not going to stop,” he said.
In a press release, the White House said that Biden “expressed admiration for the extraordinary courage of Aleksey Nalny and his legacy in fighting against corruption as well as for a democratic and free Russia where the rule of law is applied equally to all.”
Biden “emphasized Aleksey’s legacy will continue through people in Russia and the world who mourn his loss and fight for freedom, democracy and human rights.”
The meeting with Yulia Navalnaya and Dasha Navalnaya took place a day before a new round of US sanction on Russia is expected, partly because of Navalny’s murder.
In his meeting with Biden, he “affirmed that his Administration would announce major new sanctions tomorrow against Russia in response to Aleksey’s death, Russia’s repression, aggression, and its brutal, illegal war in Ukraine.”
According to a Treasury official the Biden administration is planning to impose new sanctions against more than 500 targets this Friday as a response to Navalny’s death and just before Russia’s two-year conflict in Ukraine.
