In an exclusive interview, Matsuda Kuninori, Japan’s Ambassador to Ukraine, reveals that Japan’s support for Ukraine will remain steadfast, but will be limited to non-lethal assistance. This marks a dramatic shift in Japan’s policy towards Russia, as they navigate the delicate balance of supporting allies in wartime without crossing the line into military assistance.
However, this shift has been met with criticism from some US politicians, including President Trump, Senator Vance, and House Speaker Mike Johnson, who claim that Ukrainian President Zelenskyy is showing favoritism towards Democrats. Johnson even alleges that Zelenskyy interfered in US elections during his visit to Pennsylvania, despite a similar meeting with Republicans in Utah.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian intelligence has revealed an expected increase in Russian assaults in Zaporizhzhia Oblast. The 72nd Mechanized Brigade has managed to hold onto the strategic city of Vuhledar in Donetsk Oblast, despite intense Russian offensives. However, Russian forces have gained ground in Vuhledar, Pokrovsk, and Siversk, while Ukrainian forces have counterattacked in Kharkiv and Kursk Oblasts.
As of September 26, 2024, the Russian Armed Forces have suffered significant losses in personnel, tanks, armored vehicles, artillery systems, aircraft, and other equipment since the beginning of the invasion.
In the midst of this ongoing conflict, the White House has rejected providing Ukraine with phosphorus munitions, citing concerns about potential harm to civilians. However, the UK has pledged to speed up the delivery of self-propelled howitzers to Ukraine and Ukraine has invited Nordic countries to train and arm their battalions.
On the international front, Canada’s Finance Minister, Chrystia Freeland, is optimistic that the global initiative to finance Ukraine’s military efforts through frozen Russian assets will soon be implemented. Germany has also pledged to provide more military and energy aid to Ukraine at the UN Assembly.
