U.S. President Joe Biden wants to forgive some of Ukraine’s debt. He has sent a message to Congress saying he wants to cancel half of the $4.65 billion that the U.S. owes to Ukraine.
The money was given to Ukraine in April as part of a bigger package worth $61 billion. The terms of this deal allowed President Biden to forgive up to 50% of the debt. A State Department spokesperson, Matthew Miller, said that the president’s message has been sent to Congress and it is now their decision whether or not to agree with him.
Miller expects most lawmakers to support forgiving the debt, but they do have the option to say no. The Biden administration wants to give Ukraine as much help as possible before President-elect Donald Trump takes office in two months’ time.
President Biden has also promised to deliver the rest of the aid that was allocated for Ukraine and to send anti-personnel land mines to Ukraine. He even authorized Kyiv (Ukraine’s capital) to attack targets in Russia with long-range missiles.
