Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Meets US Secretary of State in Brussels
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha met with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on November 13. The meeting took place in Brussels, a day after the US administration announced plans to increase support for Ukraine before President Joe Biden leaves office on January 20, 2025.
The US government wants to give as much help to Ukraine as possible before Donald Trump takes over. Western countries are also trying to “guarantee” their support for Kyiv. One way they’re doing this is by asking the US to let Ukraine use long-range weapons supplied by the West to strike deep into Russian territory.
Ukraine will receive more military aid from the US in the final months of Biden’s term. The UK Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, is also trying to get Biden to release $20 billion in aid for Ukraine. This is because there’s uncertainty about Trump’s plans for Ukraine. He said he would end the war “24 hours” after winning the election, but didn’t say how.
There are doubts about whether Russia will escalate the conflict if Trump becomes president. In a phone call, Trump allegedly warned Russian President Vladimir Putin not to do this. But Russia denied that the call took place.
