Bloomberg reports that Biden has rescheduled a visit to Germany for 18 October. The trip, however, has been shortened. It also no longer includes a visit to the US military base at Ramstein. He was to host a meeting of NATO leaders to discuss the support for Ukraine.
The Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was expected at the meeting to present Ukraine’s Victory Plan to key Western leaders. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte also stated that he planned to discuss the use long-range weapons on Russian military targets.
Biden will receive the highest civilian honor in Germany from President Frank-Walter Steinmeier during his visit. It’s not clear if UK PM Keir Stammer and French President Emmanuel Macron are going to attend Biden’s planned meeting with Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
Reuters and Spiegel reported the news first that Biden’s visit had been rescheduled for 18 October. His original visit was scheduled for 12 October but was postponed. This led to the cancellation of the Ramstein Meeting.
This will be the first visit by a US President to Germany in over 40 years.
According to Pentagon spokesperson Patrick Ryder, US, in collaboration and partnership with its allies, partners, and allies, have created “a robust logistic network” to facilitate a swift delivery of defense assistance to Ukraine.
Biden said, “Without additional funding, we are rapidly approaching the end of our ability help Ukraine meet its urgent operational needs.”
