European Union leaders to discuss special envoy for Ukraine peace talks
The European Union will consider appointing a special envoy for potential negotiations to end Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. This decision comes after the US held direct talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, excluding both Europe and Ukraine from the conversation.
US officials met with Putin in Saudi Arabia without Ukrainian or European participation. The meeting highlighted concerns that the EU has been left out of early talks between Washington and Moscow.
Ukrainian officials have urged the EU to act quickly in appointing a representative for potential peace discussions. Leaders are expected to define a unified stance on defense and security guarantees for Ukraine during their next summit.
The summit will also discuss what peace terms should look like and what commitments the EU is willing to make to support Kyiv in any negotiations with Moscow and Washington.
Boosting European defense
The European Commission will present a plan to boost the continent’s defense industry, injecting hundreds of billions of euros. The commission will propose measures to allow for more flexible defense spending while ensuring compliance with EU fiscal rules.
Ukraine’s economy forecast lowered
The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development has lowered its 2025 growth forecast for Ukraine’s economy, now expecting 3.5% growth instead of the previously projected 4.7%.
Russian military accused of interference
An investigation found that Russian forces interfered with locals who were evacuating people from flooded areas on their own. The volunteers’ boats were confiscated, and they were threatened.
