Hungary Criticized US Sanctions on Russian Bank
The United States has put sanctions on a major Russian bank called Gazprombank. Hungary is unhappy about this decision.
Hungary’s Foreign Minister, Peter Szijjarto, said that the sanctions are an attack on the country’s independence. He made these comments at a meeting in Turkey. Hungary gets most of its gas from Russia and pays for it through Gazprombank.
The Hungarian government has been friends with Russia for some time. They have a 15-year deal to buy gas from them every year. In fact, Hungary is more friendly to Russia than many other European countries that are part of NATO.
Szijjarto has visited Russia several times during the war in Ukraine. He has also blocked aid and sanctions against Russia on behalf of his government.
