Syrian Rebels Claim Victory Over Assad
The Syrian rebels have announced that they have successfully removed President Bashar al-Assad from power. This came after a quick attack across the country, which ended with the capture of the capital city, Damascus.
Assad was quickly taken out of the country to avoid being caught by the rebels. He was flown out of Syria using a Russian airplane. The plane’s tracking system was likely turned off so it couldn’t be followed.
Russia is now taking care of Assad. This was confirmed by Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister, Sergei Ryabkov. Russian President Vladimir Putin is questioning his security team about how they didn’t see the threat to Assad’s rule coming sooner.
Russia has been helping Assad since 2015. They have sent troops to Syria and provided support to Assad against those fighting against him. Damascus and Moscow are also allies in their conflict with Ukraine.
The UN and other groups have accused Russian forces in Syria of committing war crimes, such as bombing hospitals on purpose and using tactics that put civilians at risk. Russia has used similar tactics in Ukraine.
