Bloomberg reported on October 10 that the premiums on war risk insurance for vessels traveling through Ukraine’s Black Sea shipping corridor have increased by approximately 33 per cent as a result of recent Russian attacks on foreign ships.
According to insurance market sources the coverage has jumped from 0.75 to over 1 percent of the value of the ship.
The increase in rates is a result of Russian attacks on three foreign flagged ships, Palau, Saint Kitts & Nevis and Panama, within a four-day period between Oct. 6-9.
The Saint Kitts and Nevis vessel that was attacked on October 6 was loaded with approximately 6,000 tons Ukrainian corn intended for export. On Oct. 7, an attack on a Palau-flagged vessel resulted in five foreigners being injured and one port worker being killed. The second vessel’s cargo was not revealed.
The Ukrainian Agriculture Ministry reported on October 10 that a Russian missile strike on Odesa Oblast, on Oct. 9, also hit a civilian cargo ship flying the Panama flag that contained 45 containers of packaged sunflower oil intended to be sent to Palestine as humanitarian aid.
A ship worth $50 million would receive an increase of $125,000 for each voyage.
Bloomberg reported that the increase in volatility in the Black Sea led to wheat futures in Chicago increasing by 2.5 percent this week.
Russian ships regularly attack Ukrainian ships traveling along the route. Since the start of the war, mines are also drifting along the trade routes, which poses a threat to maritime transport.
