Slovakia May Stop Electricity to Ukraine
Slovakia might stop sending electricity to Ukraine. This could happen if Slovakia cuts off power supplies to Kyiv in response to Ukraine’s decision to halt Russian gas transit.
Ukraine is having trouble getting power because of Russian attacks. They have destroyed about half of Ukraine’s power-generating capacity, causing blackouts across the country. Slovakia’s Prime Minister Robert Fico threatened to stop sending electricity if Ukraine goes ahead with plans to cut off Russian gas supplies.
Poland has offered to help Ukraine by increasing its own electricity exports. A senior official from Poland told Bloomberg that they are ready to boost domestic power generation to support Ukraine’s electrical system.
Ukraine provides about 19% of Slovakia’s electricity imports, according to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. He warned that if Fico goes ahead with his plan, it will cost Slovakia a lot of money. Zelenskyy said that Slovakia is already losing compensation for lost Russian gas transit.
Ukraine accused Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico of siding with Russia and following the orders of President Vladimir Putin. They claim that Fico is trying to open up a “second energy front” against Ukraine.
If Slovakia stops sending electricity, Ukraine might stop sending oil from Russia through the Druzhba pipeline.
