NATO’s Command Center Lags Behind Schedule
The NATO command center in Wiesbaden, Germany is behind schedule and understaffed. This raises concerns about the alliance‘s readiness to coordinate military aid and training for Ukraine.
Despite plans to open this fall, the center has only a few hundred personnel on staff. Many posts are still unfilled because countries have been slow to send promised workers. The center was supposed to be fully operational with 700 personnel.
NATO made a big commitment to help Ukraine during Russia‘s ongoing war. The alliance pledged at least $43 billion in military aid over the next year. This is the most significant support Ukraine has received from NATO.
The command center is crucial for coordinating this aid and training. However, it seems that NATO countries have not been quick enough to send workers to staff the center. This could impact the effectiveness of the alliance’s efforts to help Ukraine.
In October, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte visited the center in Wiesbaden. He noted that the center was still being formed and had staff working from temporary locations. Rutte had previously warned that a weak peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia could have serious global implications.
