Bloomberg: US urges G7 to consider sanctioning Russian palladium and titanium

Bloomberg reported on October 23, citing a source who refused to be named, that the United States had urged its partners to consider sanctions against Russian palladium or titanium.
Officials from the administration of U.S. president Joe Biden raised the possibility that these sanctions could be imposed during a G7 meeting of deputy finance ministers on October 22 in Washington D.C.
According to the source, the U.S. proposed to initiate discussions to further weaken Russia’s economy.
Palladium is necessary for the production of computer chips and automobile catalysts, whereas titanium is crucial for the manufacture of airplanes and medical implant.
The European Union’s dependence on these metals is a major challenge. Germany, France, Italy, and the other G7 members would need to have the support of all 24 members of the European Union in order to impose sanctions.
Washington has already blacklisted Russian Titanium, but these metals play a vital role in global supply chains and governments are concerned about possible market disruptions.
The West has struggled for a long time to determine how to sanction Russian metals. Palladium prices rose by 12% in December amid speculation about future sanctions following London’s restrictions on certain Russian Metals.
In the beginning of this year, both the U.S.A. and U.K.imposed sanctions against Russian aluminum, nickel, and copper.
