UK’s Boris Johnson Talks Ukraine Peacekeeping Role
Former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson thinks British troops could play a big part in keeping peace on the border of Ukraine. He made these comments in an interview with The Telegraph on November 28.
Johnson believes that a future ceasefire agreement between Russia and Ukraine might involve European peacekeeping forces. These forces would be multinational, meaning they’d include troops from many different countries. Johnson thinks Britain should be involved in such a mission.
He doesn’t think it’s a good idea to send British combat troops directly into battle with Russian forces, however. Instead, he suggests that NATO countries could provide security as part of a United Nations Peacekeeping Force. This would offer similar protections to those who join NATO.
Johnson also talked about the UK’s historical responsibility towards Ukraine. He referenced an agreement made in 1994, when Britain, Russia, and the US promised to protect Ukraine in exchange for giving up its nuclear weapons. Johnson thinks this means that the UK has a moral obligation to help Ukraine now.
He criticized Western countries for not doing enough to support Ukraine. Johnson says they’ve been “holding them back” by imposing restrictions and not supplying enough arms. He thinks this is unfair and that Ukraine should be allowed to defend itself more effectively.
