During his visit to Kyiv, the European Union‘s top diplomat, Josep Borell, assured Kyiv that the EU would continue to support it “unwaveringly” despite the uncertainty surrounding the level of support from the United States under the leadership of President-elect Donald Trump.
Borrell said, “We need faster delivery and fewer red lines that we set ourselves,” referring to his support for allowing Ukraine to use long-range weaponry provided by the West to strike deep within Russian territory.
Borrell arrived at Kyiv earlier that day, his fifth visit to Ukraine since Russia’s full-scale invasion began in February 2022.
Borrell, ahead of his meeting with Andrii Sybiha as Foreign Minister, vowed to continue to place the EU’s support of Ukraine at the top of the agenda of the bloc.
“This support remains unwavering.” This support is essential for you to continue to defend yourself against Russia’s aggressiveness,” Borrell said at a press conference with Sybiha following the meeting.
Borrell’s visit to Kyiv in his capacity as the EU’s High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy comes just a few days following the victory of Donald Trump, the Republican candidate and former U.S. president, in the 2024 U.S. Presidential election.
Although Trump has been vague about his foreign policies plans, his sweeping win added further uncertainty to Ukraine regarding the future of Western Military Aid in its defense against the ongoing Russian Invasion.
The Telegraph reported, citing three Trump employees, on Nov. 7, that Trump could call on British and European soldiers to enforce a border buffer zone he would attempt to impose above the current frontline in Ukraine. The plan would freeze the front line in Ukraine.
According to the Telegraph, the U.S. will supply weapons to Ukraine in order to prevent Moscow from relaunching the war. The sources said that in exchange for the weapons, Ukraine would agree to not pursue its ambition to become a member of NATO for 20 years.
Sybiha, who was at the Kyiv news conference with Borrell, said that President Volodymyr Zelensky would begin preparations for an upcoming meeting with Trump.
Borrell said that EU defense ministers are meeting next week to discuss “boosting the support at this crucial hour,” including both diplomatic and military support for Kyiv.
Borrell, a staunch supporter for Ukraine, made his visit to Kyiv after a trip to South Korea in November. He encouraged Seoul to increase its support for Ukraine in light of growing concerns about North Korean troops fighting alongside Russian forces in the war against Ukraine.
The Biden administration is rushing to deliver over 500 interceptors for Patriot and National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missiles (NASAMS) systems, according to a Wall Street Journal report (WSJ) on Nov. 9 citing a senior official.

British defense intelligence estimates that Russia has suffered more than 696,00 losses since the beginning of the full-scale invasion.
