**Georgia Breaks Off EU Accession Process**
Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze announced on November 28 that the country’s ruling party, Georgian Dream (GD), is ending its bid to join the European Union. This decision follows a move by Brussels to freeze Georgia’s accession talks due to the government’s failure to meet EU reform targets.
**Reason for Decision**
The GD made this decision in response to a recent resolution passed by the European Parliament. The resolution called the October 26 elections fraudulent and demanded sanctions against Georgian Dream leaders and new elections. This visibly upset the ruling party, leading them to reject further accession negotiations until 2028.
**Kobakhidze Speaks Out**
Prime Minister Kobakhidze stated that Georgia is a European country with shared values, but it will not accept EU integration as charity. He claimed that EU-Georgian relations should be a two-way street and that it’s unacceptable for Europeans to portray these relations as one-sided or hurl insults at the Georgian government.
**GD’s Position**
Kobakhidze said that Georgia is committed to becoming a full member of the European family by 2030. However, he emphasized that this process should not be about charity, but rather a partnership between equals.
