Salome Zurabishvili, the Georgian president, held a press conference in which she announced that she would not accept the official results of the 26 October parliamentary election.
She thanked all of the voters who voted to give Georgia a European future. “There were many of you. You won in these election and no one has the right to take away this European future from us.”
President Zurabishvili thanked the media and observers who, in difficult circumstances did everything possible to protect the vote.
She said that “there were so few violations, it was impossible to detect all of them”. She said, “We saw something very unusual. This was a total falsehood, a total theft of votes, using every trick that can be used in order to falsify an election, and on top – the use modern technologies to whitewash elections.”
She said that it was unprecedented and added: “We were both witnesses and victims of an Russian special operation. A new type of hybrid war waged against our population.”
“On that particular day, we were denied the right to vote.” They stole our electoral institution and our constitutional right of voting, including our emigrants. These were Russian elections.
She said that she was grateful to her international partners for exposing the violations, but added that it wasn’t enough.
“I don’t recognise these elections as the only independent institution.” These elections cannot even be acknowledged. We won’t accept it.” She added, “We will stand together and say that we will not accept Russia’s new form of subjugation”.
The President invited citizens to gather at Rustaveli Avenue, on October 28, and “tell ourselves and the world we don’t recognise these elections. We defend our constitutional rights and every vote as well as our future.” It is our right that we have free, fair and just elections. This will be an act of symbolism to show the world that we are serious about our cause”.
She called on international partners stand by Georgians.
“Nothing can make these election legitimate,” she concluded.
