British Minister Speaks Out Against Georgian Government’s Actions
The UK’s Minister for Europe, Stephen Doughty, has expressed serious concerns about the actions of Georgian government officials. In a speech at the House of Commons, he spoke out against the “crackdown on peaceful demonstrators” and called it completely unacceptable.
Doughty mentioned that the UK has taken steps to respond to these actions. He said that the UK has suspended its assistance to the Georgian government, restricted defense cooperation, and limited engagement with a key group in Georgia. The UK has also imposed visa bans and sanctions on those responsible for the violence.
The minister was asked about potential sanctions against Bidzina Ivanishvili, who is described as a “Putin–backed oligarch” and the de facto ruler of Georgia. Doughty said that he cannot comment on future sanctions, but the UK continues to closely monitor the situation in Georgia.
Doughty also mentioned that the UK has sanctioned several officials responsible for violence against journalists and peaceful demonstrators in Georgia. He praised European partners who are working together to support an open and free civil society and media in Georgia.
The minister emphasized the importance of standing together with European partners on matters like this, especially within the Council of Europe.
