Keir Starmer, the British Prime Minister, suggested that the Kremlin may be more desperate if it uses North Korean forces to fight against Ukraine. The news comes amid reports that 11,000 North Korean soldiers are training in Russia, and will be ready for combat alongside Russian forces on 1 November. This could provide Russia with more manpower and complicate Ukraine’s military efforts. This could also strain the international relations and lead South Korea to increase their support for Ukraine or impose new sanctions.
Starmer said, “If this is the case, then it shows, in my opinion, the level of desperation,” at a Berlin press conference.
The British Prime Minister said that Russia is in a “difficult position” due to the high number of casualties, and the impact of the war on its resources. He also noted that 40% of their budget was consumed by the war. The press conference was held after discussions between Starmer, leaders from the United States and France, in which the ongoing support for Ukraine and other topics were discussed. The United States expressed concern over the reports, while Estonian analysts believe that North Korean participation would not have a significant impact on the situation at front. Biden said that diplomacy is still a powerful tool for addressing the global threat of nuclear weapons, despite the strained relationship with these countries. North Korea announced earlier that it would be increasing its military by 1,4 million people, a significant expansion meant to counter perceived threats from the US or South Korea. The move comes in response to a growing military partnership between North Korea, Russia and rising tensions.
