British Scholar Declines Award Over Georgia‘s Politics
Donald Rayfield, a well-known British scholar and expert on Georgian literature, has turned down an award from the Writers’ House of Georgia.
Rayfield was unhappy with the country‘s current political climate and the actions of the ruling party, Georgian Dream. He said he couldn’t accept any gift associated with them.
The award was to be given to Rayfield by Ketevan Dumbadze, who is director of the Writers’ House of Georgia. However, Rayfield did not want to receive it from her.
Rayfield has closely followed Georgia’s history and politics for many years. He hopes that things will change in Georgia soon.
The Writers’ House of Georgia was at the center of a controversy when Dumbadze was appointed director in 2023. Many writers and publishers were unhappy with this decision, and some even boycotted the organization.
