**Serbian Parliament Speaker Supports Vucic’s Referendum Initiative**
The Serbian parliament speaker, Ana Brnabic, said on Wednesday that the ruling party has collected over 100 signatures in support of a referendum on President Aleksandar Vucic‘s presidency. This was after President Vucic called for an advisory referendum in response to a poll showing he did not have majority support among the public.
Brnabic told a news conference in parliament that the opposition had to submit their own signatures, saying “this will just create added tension and is their way to destabilize Serbia”. She said the advisory referendum was a chance for the opposition to remove Vucic as head of state.
The ruling party has all but guaranteed its support for the initiative, with SNS chief MP Milenko Jovanov stating that 111 out of 113 MPs from his party had signed the proposal.
However, democracy watchdog CRTA has questioned the legality and constitutionality of an advisory referendum on the president’s presidency. Their program director Rasa Nedeljkov said that they didn’t go into whether a referendum was possible, as it is not, but wanted to see how citizens perceived this idea. “We want to see if people are being manipulated,” he added.
