**FDP Plans to Introduce New Proposal for Taurus Missile Transfer to Ukraine**
The Free Democratic Party (FDP) plans to introduce a new proposal in the German parliament next week. This move comes after their exit from Chancellor Olaf Scholz‘s governing coalition.
**Supporting Ukraine**
The FDP proposal is about transferring long-range Taurus cruise missiles to Ukraine. The Taurus missile system has a range of around 500 kilometers and could greatly help Ukraine’s defense against Russian aggression. Christian Dürr, the FDP parliamentary group leader, said that his party has always supported helping Ukraine with its allies.
**A New Way Forward**
Dürr stated that the US is already taking action to support Ukraine, so now Germany should do the same. The proposal could gain majority support in parliament since three parties (FDP, CDU/CSU, and Greens) have a combined total of 403 seats out of 735.
**A Complicated Situation**
However, the situation is complicated because the Greens are part of Scholz’s minority government. This might force them to vote against the proposal, even though they previously supported missile deliveries. The FDP deputies also voted against similar proposals in the past due to coalition discipline.
**New Backing**
The proposal has gained support from prominent politicians, including CDU’s Friedrich Merz and Green Party‘s Robert Habeck. This development marks a significant shift in German politics regarding military support for Ukraine, challenging Scholz’s position on providing Taurus missiles to Ukrainian forces.
