Businesses and Artists Join Protests Against Georgian Government
The economic situation in Georgia is getting worse. Nearly 2,000 businesses have signed a petition calling for new elections. The government’s foreign policy and police actions are causing trouble.
Many big companies like SPAR and EY have joined the protest. They want to show that they disagree with the government’s decisions. A website called Free Business has been set up for people to register their support.
Some businesses are showing solidarity with the protesters by giving money to those who need it. TBC Bank and the Bank of Georgia, two big banks in Georgia, have given GEL 5 million (USD 1.8 million) to help people and small businesses affected by the protests.
Theaters and concert halls are also participating in the protest. They will not sell tickets for events until January 2025. This is to show support for artists who went on strike.
Solidarity funds have been set up to help those who have lost money due to the crisis. Some of these funds were started by well-known people, like a former Prime Minister and a journalist.
People are also starting to boycott government-friendly businesses. For example, some restaurants that supplied food to police during the protests have seen fewer customers.
Economic Experts Fear for the Future
Experts think that if the situation doesn’t improve, it could lead to bigger economic problems in Georgia. The value of the country’s currency has dropped, and people are worried about what might happen next.
The government is trying to control the situation, but many are not confident in their ability to do so. The country’s economy is already in a difficult place, and things might get worse if the crisis continues.
