**Canada Boosts Military Aid to Ukraine with $35 Million Package**
In a significant move, Canada’s Defense Minister David J. McGuinty announced over $35 million Canadian (approximately $25.5 million USD) in military assistance to Ukraine during the 28th Ukraine Defense Contact Group meeting in Brussels. This aid package is part of Canada’s ongoing support for Ukraine as it faces Russian aggression.
**Aid Package Details**
The $30 million Canadian portion of the aid package will be used to provide Coyote and Bison armoured vehicles, along with new equipment and ammunition from Canadian companies. This builds on Canada’s previous delivery of 64 Coyote armoured vehicles that arrived in Ukraine in December 2024. These vehicles offer advanced battlefield surveillance, reconnaissance, and intelligence-gathering capabilities, allowing commanders to make informed decisions and maintain situational awareness against Russian forces.
**Enhancing Electronic Warfare Capabilities**
An additional $5 million Canadian will fund electronic warfare anti-jammer kits from Canada’s defense industry. These kits are vital as they protect and enhance the effectiveness of Ukraine’s precision-guided munitions and communications by countering Russian electronic warfare, ensuring that weapons and drones remain operational despite enemy jamming attempts.
**Canada’s Commitment to NATO**
Minister McGuinty emphasized Canada’s commitment to NATO during his remarks at the Ramstein-format meeting. He stated, “As a founding member of NATO, Canada believes that the Alliance is the cornerstone of transatlantic security and we are moving quickly to accelerate our defence spending.” This statement reflects Canada’s growing investment in defense spending as part of its efforts to support Ukraine.
**New Defense Production Mechanism**
The Ukraine Defense Contact Group meeting also resulted in an agreement between Ukraine and partner nations to establish a defense production mechanism. Additionally, Canada assumed leadership of F-16 pilot training for Ukraine through a $389 million investment over five years, including critical airfield equipment provided by Canadian industry.
**Canada’s Total Support for Ukraine**
Since February 2022, Canada has committed over $19.5 billion in total assistance to Ukraine, including $4.5 billion in military aid. This significant investment reflects Canada’s ongoing commitment to supporting Ukraine’s efforts against Russian aggression.
