**Canada Sends First Tranche of G7 Loan to Ukraine**
The Canadian government has sent the first installment of its $3.5 billion contribution to a $50 billion loan for Ukraine, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on February 24.
The money will be used to support Ukraine’s economy, which has been hit hard by Russia‘s invasion. The loan is covered by around $300 billion in Russian assets held in Western bank accounts.
In addition to the loan, Canada is also providing new military support to Ukraine, including:
* 25 LAV III infantry fighting vehicles
* 2 combat support vehicles
* 4 F-16 flight simulators
These are just some of the many military aid packages announced by Canada since the start of the war.
**Other Countries Announce Support**
Several other countries have also announced new support for Ukraine, including:
* The European Commission has pledged an additional $3.7 billion in aid to Ukraine.
* Australia has introduced a package of sanctions against Russia.
* New Zealand has imposed restrictions on over 50 individuals and entities with ties to Russia.
* Sweden has donated air defense systems worth $113 million to Ukraine.
**Russia’s Response**
Despite the international pressure, Russia continues to carry out military actions in Ukraine. On February 24, it launched a massive drone attack on Ukraine, deploying 185 Shahed-type attack drones and decoy drones. Ukrainian air defenses were able to shoot down 113 of the drones.
**International Reaction**
The international community has condemned Russia’s actions and expressed support for Ukraine. In a phone call with US President Donald Trump, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau emphasized that any peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia must not be seen as appeasement by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
