**Ukraine Fatigue Grows in Europe**
In Romania‘s recent presidential and parliamentary elections, Russia-friendly nationalists made a strong showing. This is causing concern for Ukraine as it faces growing fatigue across Europe.
**Strong Performance of Far-Right Candidates**
The far-right candidate Calin Georgescu came first in the initial round of the presidential vote with nearly 23% of the votes. He has praised Russian President Vladimir Putin and Romania’s World War II-era pro-Nazi dictator Ion Antonescu. The Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) party, which is also far-right, came second in the parliamentary elections.
**Romania’s Economic Challenges**
The election results are mainly attributed to Romania’s economic challenges and dissatisfaction with the “establishment” parties rather than foreign policy issues. Georgescu’s appeal rested on his heavily spiritual and religion-laden messaging, gathering support among the predominantly Orthodox Christian population.
**Concerns for Ukraine**
If Georgescu wins the second round of the presidential vote, it could mean a change in Romania’s position towards a more neutral stance than today. This would be a worrying signal for Ukraine as it faces growing fatigue across Europe. The election results come amid the growing Kremlin-friendly sentiment in Europe.
**Impact on European Union**
The idea of disengaging from Ukraine may no longer be considered fringe at a time when Kyiv needs support from its partners the most. Romania’s position could have a domino effect in the region and maybe also in the European Union, said Sergiu Miscoiu, a political science professor.
**Snap Elections Possible**
Georgescu could coerce the parties to shape a cabinet closer to his image or prompt snap elections that could potentially give the far right a chance to mobilize more support amid political instability. This would further destabilize the region and create uncertainty for Ukraine.
