**Candlelight Vigils in Montenegro and Serbia**
Residents of Cetinje, a city in Montenegro, gathered for candlelight vigils to remember the 12 people killed by a local resident. The city’s streets were decorated with flags flying at half mast across the country.
The vigils were organized by families who lost loved ones in a similar mass shooting in 2022. Candles were lit in front of important buildings, including the Cetinje Monastery and Montenegro’s embassy in Belgrade. A square in Novi Sad also had candles lit for the victims.
Aco Martinovic was the person responsible for the killings on January 1. He killed two children and wounded several others. This is not the first time a mass shooting has occurred in Cetinje. In August 2022, a local man shot and killed eight adults and two children.
The city’s communal services removed New Year decorations from the streets and public places as a sign of respect for the victims.
