The Central Asia Regional Economic Cooperation Program (CAREC) has endorsed a new Climate Change Action Plan and launched the CAREC Climate and Sustainability Project Preparatory Fund to strengthen regional collaboration in climate resilience, low carbon growth, and sustainable developments.
The endorsement was made at the 23rd CAREC Ministerial Conference, held today in Astana. The Ministers also endorsed the Midterm Review of the CAREC 2030 Strategy which recommended reinvigorating the regional cooperation, enhancing operations towards climate-smart developments and regional public goods among others.
“The approval and establishment of the Climate and Sustainability Project Preparation Fund and the CAREC Climate Change Action Plan are significant milestones in the collective efforts we have made to address climate changes,” said Masatsugu Asakawa (President of the Asian Development Bank, ADB), who delivered a keynote speech at the conference. “By working with each other, we can create resilient infrastructure, early warning systems, a greener, renewable energy-powered future.”
The CAREC Program is a collaboration between countries in Central Asia and the Caucasus as well as South Asia and East Asia and development partners aiming at promoting sustainable development through regional co-operation. It facilitates practical and results-based regional initiatives and projects to accelerate economic growth in the region and reduce poverty. ADB hosts CAREC Secretariat.
