US President Joe Biden will press the incoming Trump Administration to continue supporting Ukraine, stressing that any pullback in support could lead to increased instability in Europe.
Jake Sullivan, US National Security Advisor said in an interview to CBS News that US President Joe Biden will try to convince the incoming Trump administration of the importance of continuing to support Ukraine.
The senior White House official stated Biden’s strategy in these final days is “the same as it has been for the past two and a quarter years, that is, to put Ukraine in a strong position on the battlefield so that it can be in a strong position at the negotiation table.”
Sullivan said that the administration would strive to use all the resources allocated by Congress for military assistance to Ukraine until the end its term.
Sullivan said that “President Biden will have an opportunity to make a case over the next 70-days to Congress and the incoming administration, that the United States shouldn’t walk away from Ukraine. Walking away from Ukraine would mean more instability in Europe.”
The US security advisor did not specify if a new funding proposal was in the works. He did mention, however, that the White House wants to continue to support Ukraine after Biden’s tenure ends. “The threat to Ukraine will not change no matter what happens on the battlefield or the negotiating table,” he said.
Mykhailo Podoliak, advisor to the head of the office of the president of Ukraine, had previously commented on the US support for Ukraine after Trump’s inauguration. UNIAN reports that he said the new US President would not give in to Moscow.
Podoliak said that Trump would want to show the world the strength of America, including Russia and allies.
