China claims that it is not involved in what it calls “the Ukrainian crisis” and has strict controls over dual-use exports.
China has strongly criticised the United States for imposing sanctions on drone manufacturers suspected of collaborating and transferring lethal weapons to Moscow, while firmly denial any transfer of deadly weapons.
The US sanctions of October 17 are the first time that the US has directly targeted Chinese entities involved in weapon production for Russia. China has provided indirect support to Russia in the past by supplying dual use technologies such as microelectronics and drones. This raised Western concerns. Previous sanctions targeted Chinese suppliers of dual use goods to Russia.
China News reported that at a press conference held on 18 October by the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning, China “resolutely opposed the US imposition of illegal unilateral sanction on Chinese companies“, and “absolutely did not accept the US’s baseless accusations and pressure”.
Mao Ning said that China was not “the creator or party of the Ukrainian crisis”, which is the traditional term Beijing uses to describe Russia’s invasion in Ukraine. She claimed that China has “never provided lethal weapons to any side in the Russia-Ukraine Conflict” and “strictly controls Dual-Use Items, including drone Exports.”
The spokesperson also asserted that China is opposed to the use of civilian drones in military applications and has allegedly played a constructive role promoting a solution through politics.
