Civil Activist Arrested
Niko Managadze, a civil activist, was arrested last night. This information was shared by his lawyer, Mariam Pataridze.
According to Mariam, Niko was with another person when he was arrested. They were both taken to the third isolator in Dighomi.
Mariam thinks that Niko’s arrest may be because he didn’t report to the police and wanted a magistrate judge present during questioning. This is unusual and might have caused problems for the police.
Niko was returning home from a protest when he was caught by unknown officers. The police later asked him to come in for questioning, but he requested that a magistrate judge be present. Mariam spoke with the investigator and said they would attend the questioning at court.
However, just hours after this conversation, Niko was arrested again on Kostava Street. The police accused him of not showing up when summoned and making things difficult. They then took him to the police department in a different way.
A routine protocol was drawn up against Niko, but he didn’t sign it. Mariam said that at no point did Niko think the officers were police, even when they were in a car together. The officers were not wearing uniforms and didn’t show official documents to prove their identity or position.
