CNN reported on October 16 that U.S. president Joe Biden will meet with the leaders of Germany France and the U.K. later this week in Berlin after his earlier trip was postponed because of Hurricane Milton.
Berlin confirmed that Biden will visit Germany at the conclusion of this week. The trip is expected to take place on October 18.
The U.S.A., U.K. Germany and France are Ukraine‘s top arms suppliers. They play a vital role in supporting Kyiv’s resistance to Russian aggression. It is unclear whether the upcoming summit of Western leaders will result in major strategic decisions.
On Oct. 12, the U.S. President was supposed to convene in Germany a meeting of leaders from the Ukraine Defense Contact Group (also known as the Ramstein Summit), where the victory plan for Ukraine was to be presented. The summit has not been rescheduled.
Instead, President Volodymyr Zelensky went on a European Tour to present his plan before German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and U.K. Premier Keir Starmer. He also met with French President Emmanuel Macron and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Melloi in an attempt to rally support from Western allies.
Biden was pitched the plan by Ukraine’s President during his visit to the U.S.
Ukrainian officials have already revealed some parts of the plan. These include those related to Western political and military support for Kyiv in its fight against Russia’s full scale invasion.
Zelensky wants renewed financial and military support from Europe, as he fears that the backing could wane if Donald Trump, the former U.S. president, wins next month’s elections.
As winter approaches, Russian forces continue making gains along Ukraine’s east front and are targeting critical energy infrastructure.
After Ukraine’s withdrawal, Russian forces have focused their efforts on the Donetsk Oblast cities of Pokrovsk Toretsk and Kurakhove where outnumbered and outgunned Ukrainian troops are slowly losing ground.
Ukrenergo, Ukraine’s state-owned power company, said later in the day that repairs were underway. The outages had been caused by “technical” reasons that were not specified. The energy supply will resume “within a few hours.”
