CoE Congress: Georgia must return to the path towards democratic consolidation and recommit itself to democratic principles

The of Local and Regional Authorities of the reiterated its appeal to the authorities not to take any actions that would threaten political pluralism or infringe upon rights, or undermine the foundations of government Georgia.
The Congress reminded the national authorities of Georgia that they must fulfill the obligations and committments they renewed in the Reykjavik Declaration, in May 2023. If they fail to do this, they will be held accountable by the statutory bodies of the Council of Europe.
In a Declaration adopted after an urgent debate on the Georgian situation during its 47th Session, presented by Congress Vice President Xavier Cadoret, (, L SOC//PD), Congress expressed deep concerns over clear signs of democracy backsliding in Georgia and the weakening of the human rights, marked by the increased polarisation of the society and the enactment of laws that run counter to Council of Europe Standards.
The Declaration reaffirmed the need for effective protections of human rights, fundamental freedoms and non-discrimination, including of assembly. Local authorities should not be forced to violate human and fundamental rights or implement anti-democratic policy to the detriment to inclusivity, toleration and peaceful coexistence in their communities. The Congress also reaffirmed its commitment to engaging in a constructive political dialogue with Georgian authorities. This was particularly in the context of a high level visit to Georgia. It also reiterated its support for the efforts of Georgian at all levels of government to safeguard human rights and uphold the rule-of-law and promote democracy.
