Serbian Authorities Must Act Over TV Cameramen Assaults
The Council of Europe‘s Safety of Journalists Platform is calling for a quick and thorough investigation into attacks on two TV cameramen. The assaults happened in Novi Sad last November while the men were covering a protest.
N1 and Euronews cameramen were targeted as they worked. N1’s Nikola Popovic was hit in the hands by someone from the crowd during a live broadcast. His camera fell to the ground and got damaged. Before the attack, he had been insulted with sexist comments and gestures.
Another cameraman, who works for Euronews, was knocked to the ground. The press release from the Safety of Journalists Platform mentioned that many people were at the protest, but police did not take action despite being present in strong numbers.
The platform believes those responsible for the assaults should be punished. It received information about the incidents from the Serbian Supreme Public Prosecution.
Serbian authorities have been asked to investigate these events as soon as possible.
