Concern Over Serbia’s Political Situation
The Council of Europe (CoE) Parliamentary Assembly has expressed concern over the situation in Serbia. Co-rapporteurs Axel Schäfer and Victoria Tiblom said that the country’s political climate is unstable due to massive protests across the country.
These protests include various social groups demanding accountability, transparency, and justice. Protesters are upset about corruption in public institutions, which they say undermines democracy. The co-rapporteurs called on the Serbian government and leaders to address these demands peacefully.
They also expressed concern over police violence against protesters and lack of protection for public assemblies. The co-rapporteurs condemned these incidents and asked for investigations. They welcomed an offer from the OSCE/ODIHR to send a monitoring mission to Serbia.
This mission would assess compliance with international standards on freedom of assembly. The co-rapporteurs also expressed regret over conditions for NGOs and human rights defenders, who are reportedly being harassed by authorities.
They called on the Serbian government to respect its obligations under international law, including freedom of expression, association, and assembly. The co-rapporteurs were concerned about reports of surveillance over journalists and activists in Serbia and urged an end to this practice.
