**Georgian Journalist’s Imprisonment Sparks Concern**
The imprisonment of Georgian journalist Mzia Amaghlobeli is a serious threat to press freedom, according to Gulnoza Said, director of the Europe and Central Asia program at the Committee to Protect Journalists. Said spoke with Voice of America about the case.
Amaghlobeli’s imprisonment is a “very serious violation” of press freedom, said Said. She has been on hunger strike to protest her treatment and is in a critical condition. Said urged Georgian officials to release Amaghlobeli immediately and provide her with necessary medical care.
**Case Seen as Politically Motivated**
Said described the case against Amaghlobeli as “politically motivated” and unjust. She believes that the journalist is being targeted for her work, which is a clear violation of press freedom. The Committee to Protect Journalists and other organizations consider Amaghlobeli a political prisoner.
**Concerns About Human Rights in Georgia**
The imprisonment of Amaghlobeli is just one example of the regressing state of press freedom in Georgia, said Said. She expressed concern about the government’s policies and their impact on human rights in the country. The Committee to Protect Journalists has observed that the Georgian government is distancing itself from the European Union and violating press freedom and human rights.
**Similar Cases in Other Countries**
Said noted that cases similar to Amaghlobeli’s have been seen in other countries, such as Azerbaijan. In those cases, journalists have gone on hunger strike to draw attention to their situation and protest the charges against them.
