Construction of Hotel “Budapest” in Vake Park is Suspended Soon After Resumption

On the request of Tbilisi City Hall, the of the hotel “Budapest” in Park was halted shortly after it resumed.
The municipal inspection officers arrived on the scene and asked the builder, Giorgi Zakadze, stop the work immediately. He was threatened with fine up to 50,000 GEL because he did not have a building permit according to the 2015 decree.
The builder agreed to the request, and it is expected that negotiations will continue between him and City Hall.
The construction of the Budapest Hotel in was resumed the morning of 15th after it had been suspended due to public demonstrations and hearings.
The of upheld the ordinance of former Mayor of Tbilisi Gigi Ugulava from 2013. The investor was able to regain a legal permit for the construction of a hotel at Vake Park.
Negotiations on relocation were initiated between the builder, Tbilisi City Hall and the builder following the decision. City Hall announced at the end of 2020 that no new construction could be done in the Vake Park. Giorgi Zakaidze, however, said that at the time the City Hall was unable to provide an alternative location.
