**30 Years Since Ukraine Gave Up Nuclear Arms**
On December 5, it was thirty years since the Budapest Memorandum. This agreement gave security guarantees to Ukraine in exchange for the country giving up its nuclear weapons.
The Soviet Union had recently fallen apart when this deal was made. Ukraine promised not to make nuclear bombs again as part of the agreement.
**Was Giving Up Nuclear Arms a Good Idea?**
A reporter from The Kyiv Independent, Oleg Sukhov, spoke with Robert Kelley about the agreement. Kelley is an engineer who worked on U.S. nuclear weapons for over 35 years. He was asked if Ukraine’s nuclear arms would be useful now and if the country still had the ability to make a nuclear bomb.
