On October 22, Czech journalist Ray Baseley had his entry to Georgia denied. He posted the information on his social media, and a photo of the document he received from the border police. The document stated that he had been denied entry due to “other cases” as defined by Georgian law.
“Hello Georgians. Journalists. And Czechs. Today at 19:30, I was denied entry into Georgia without any reason or explanation. This is unacceptable. Even the local border forces don’t know the reason. Baseley shared online: “If you can help, please write to me.”
Soon after posting, his partner commented that Baseley’s phone had been confiscated and his personal belongings were also taken. She then left a second comment, saying that she contacted the Czech Embassy but they had not yet found the journalist. No one has provided an update on the journalist’s whereabouts.
Hello, I am Ray’s partner. They took all of his belongings and staff, including the phone, 8 hours ago. Since then, he hasn’t been in contact with anyone. Please let me know if you have any information on who else I can contact in government or civil society. — Maria Kaplina (@Mar_Kaplina), October 23, 2024
